Kudos evolved out of an idea where employees would be able to provide feedback for their co-workers and they would earn points or badges based on their performance and recommendations from teammates. This tool would have rewards for outstanding performance, and would allow exemplary employees the ability to stand out to their superiors. Kudos like most similar tools would only be used by employees if there are incentives. Thus gamification allows for the employees and employers the opportunity to earn and build a resume of their current performance at their workplace.
Most of the user testing and discovery was done with current co-workers. Guerrilla testing was used heavily to identify pain-points in applications we were using as well as interactions co-workers and employers have on a day to day basis that are not easily recorded. The goal was to provide a location that kudos, praise, feedback (good & bad) and accomplishments could be complied for others to see and for employers to use in performance reviews.
Using findings from the testing and other similar applications making it simple to quickly send a kudo and see kudos you have received was important. Also, wanted to provide the opportunity to track current sprints, tasks and long & short term goals. Accomplishing these goals along with earning kudos, shoutouts and awards help earn badges which can be used to show performance of the employee. View the prototype in action here. We also wanted to incorporate the ability for corporations to use their own employee address book thus making installation and adoption easy for new users and companies.
