Discovery

UNC Health Care is a not-for-profit integrated health care system owned by the state of North Carolina and based in Chapel Hill. With such a large network of hospitals, medical centers and physicians, it was important to have a centralized location for information, communication and collaboration between hospitals. The intranet being used by the UNC Health Care system was not properly connected and were built in silo's that made it hard for communication between hospitals and centers.

Solution

User Research

The main goal was to listen and learn from current UNC employees on what their primary pain-points were with the current intranet and was goals they were trying to achieve with the new system. We conducted in-person interviews, usability testing and shadowing users during their daily work when interacting with the existing intranet. We uncovered significant problems with nurses being able to log their schedules, see other schedules on their floors, finding department pages for employees to sign up for events and teams, as well as communicating with other hospitals on behalf of new procedures and current patients.
